Description

“Innovative Intaglio: Bridging Digital Processes and Traditional Printmaking Technique”

In this workshop, join artist Jon Barcan, and learn how to incorporate digital imagery into traditional copper intaglio etching processes. Students will learn how to expose text/illustration/photography to silkscreens, and then screen print water-based ink to the surface of their copper substrate. This will then act as the plate’s acid resist during the completion of rich and darkly etched aquatint textures.
The highlight of this workshop is its versatility. Artists can use this unique process to incorporate any artistic imagery that is made digitally.

Barcan will provide all materials and guidance, ensuring that each attendee can fully engage with both digital and hand-drawn techniques. Ideal for artists looking to explore new mediums or expand their printmaking skills, this workshop offers a unique blend of modern and traditional methods, giving life to your artistic visions. Join us to push the boundaries of printmaking image making!

This workshop will cover:

  • Copper Plate Preparation
  • Digital Image Preparation and understanding how to use a ‘half tone’
  • Line Etching
  • Spray Paint Aquatint
  • Transferring your analog image to your plate
  • Transferring your digital image to your plate
  • Intro to Screen Printing (coating screens, mixing/printing inks, etc)
  • The Screen Print Acid Resist method
  • Etching with Ferric Chloride
  • and finally, Inking/Wiping and Printing your image

This workshop is perfect for those that enjoy exploring combining art processes, and/or those that want to learn a lot about printmaking in a short amount of time!
